Magnesium is the most “female” mineral there is in nature: from the first menstrual cycle to pregnancy, from adolescence to the menopause and beyond, its functions and benefits are fundamental for women’s health.
Magnesium for women: what is it used for?
Magnesium is responsible for over 300 enzymatic reactions and is involved in many metabolic processes. The most important of these for the well-being of the female body include:
- Nerve function: stress, general fatigue, frequent headaches, as well as mood swings, irritability and difficulty sleeping are common disorders for which magnesium can offer valid support. In fact, magnesium acts directly on the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, melanin, dopamine, noradrenaline and GABA, contributing to normal psychological function and maintaining the correct activity of the nervous system.
- Muscle function: magnesium helps us to control muscle contractions and relaxation, making it an essential mineral for people who do sport, as well as to relieve menstrual pains, including the classic stomach cramps during periods. Furthermore, during pregnancy it can effectively prevent uterine contractions and lumbosciatica.
- Bone health: magnesium is also important for bone health, as it acts on the synthesis of Vitamin D and the absorption of calcium, a fundamental factor for all women during the menopause.

Daily intake of magnesium for women
According to the EFSA, the DRV (Dietary Reference Value) of magnesium for adults is 375 mg. Most of the magnesium we take in through our diet is consumed and disposed of during normal diuresis and sweating –especially in the summer–, so to maintain stable levels in the body it is recommended to supplement magnesium every day.
For women, the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of magnesium varies according to age, in addition to specific needs. The table shows the daily amount of magnesium to supplement for women of all ages:
Phase | Daily requirement |
---|---|
Pre-adolescence (9-13 years) | 240 mg/day |
Adolescence (14-18 years) | 360 mg/day |
Adult women (+18 years) | 320 mg/day |
Pregnant women | 320 mg/day |
When breast-feeding | 360 mg/day |
Women over 60 | 320 mg/day |
